CHAIN REACTIONS

Systemic interactions that cascade — one event triggers another, which triggers more: fire spreads to oil which explodes into steam, a toppled object crushes a trigger, elements combine into escalating consequences.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 makes surface interactions its combat signature: poison clouds ignite, water conducts electricity, blessed and cursed surfaces layer into a chemistry set every fireball stirs. Breath of the Wild's chemistry engine lets wind, fire, metal, and electricity interact anywhere — players mow grass into updrafts and drop metal weapons into lightning storms. Designers use chain reactions to generate emergent solutions no one authored (the player's clever combo feels invented, not selected), to make the world feel physically coherent and honest — rules that always apply, to enemies and players alike — and to multiply content: a small set of interacting elements yields combinatorial situations. Key decisions: how consistent the rules are (one exception teaches players to stop experimenting), how readable states and reactions appear before commitment, and whether AI participates in the same system, which is what makes reactions feel like physics instead of player-only tricks. Pitfall: cascades that punish more than they empower — if every fight devolves into everything-on-fire chaos the player can't reason about, emergence becomes noise and players retreat to the boring safe option.
