Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's item distribution is position-aware: last place rolls bullet bills and lightning while the leader draws coins, making every race close by construction. League of Legends uses bounty gold — kill streaks and gold leads raise the reward for taking the leader down, so snowballing carries a self-correcting price. Designers use catch-up mechanics to protect the social experience (a blowout is boring for everyone, including the winner), to keep matches decided late rather than at first blood, and to make losing feel recoverable, which is what keeps players queuing again. Key decisions: how visible and legible the correction is (hidden rubber-banding discovered feels like cheating; explicit bounties read as fair rules), whether catch-up rewards trailing players' good play or just their position, and how strong the correction can get before winning stops mattering. Pitfall: over-correction that punishes skill — if leading is strictly disadvantageous, optimal play becomes sandbagging until the final stretch, and the mechanic has inverted the competition it was meant to preserve.
