BALLISTICS/BULLET DROP

Projectiles are simulated as physical objects — gravity pulls shots into an arc, travel time forces leading moving targets, sometimes wind and drag intervene — instead of instant hitscan rays.

Sniper Elite 4 builds its entire identity on the firing solution: distance, gravity, wind, and heart rate all bend the bullet, with a slow-motion kill-cam rewarding a mastered shot. Arma 3 simulates drop, travel time, and zeroing across engagements that stretch past a kilometer, making range estimation a core infantry skill. Designers use ballistics to create a skill ceiling that aim-alone can't provide, to make distance tactically real (long range becomes a different discipline, not just smaller targets), and to sell simulation authenticity. It also softens the dominance of instant-hit snipers in multiplayer by taxing every long shot with prediction. Key decisions: how much physics to model (drop only, or wind/drag/penetration), what assists exist (rangefinders, scope zeroing, aim markers) and at which difficulty tiers, and how to teach an invisible force — tracer rounds and impact puffs are ballistics UI. Pitfall: simulation pride over feedback; if players can't see why they missed, realistic ballistics just feels like random spread with extra steps.
