Civilization VI's alliance types (military, research, economic) deepen over time and grant escalating shared bonuses, while Europa Universalis IV makes alliance webs the core of survival — declaring war means weighing which great powers each side's promises will drag in. Designers use alliances to make other factions matter beyond target selection, to let weaker players or AIs band together against a leader, and to create the delicious downstream drama of obligations coming due at the worst moment. Key decisions: what allies actually share (visibility, borders, war entry, victory), how the AI decides to accept or honor a pact and how legible that logic is to the player, and the cost of breaking faith — reputation systems only matter if betrayal has a price. Pitfall: alliances that are strictly free value, which every player accepts with everyone and ignores; the mechanic works when commitment excludes something — allying A locks out B, or promises drag you into wars you didn't want.
