Achievement unlocks

Discrete, tracked accomplishments — platform-level (Steam, Xbox) or in-game — awarded for completing specific tasks, milestones, or challenges, often with a public completion percentage. Rocket League's platform achievements and Hollow Knight's in-game completion tracking both give players concrete, checkable goals beyond just finishing the main content. Designers use achievements to surface content players might otherwise miss (an achievement for finding a secret area draws attention to it), to give completionists a long-tail goal, and to provide bite-sized recognition for skill or exploration milestones. Key decisions: difficulty spread (a mix of easy, story-tied, and genuinely hard achievements serves different player types), whether achievements reveal spoilers (titles and descriptions need care), platform integration versus in-game-only tracking, and whether any achievements grant actual rewards versus pure recognition. Pitfall: achievement lists padded with trivial 'complete the tutorial' entries dilute the prestige of harder ones — thoughtful curation matters more than raw count.
